Sell For Free vs. Facebook Marketplace

By Shiloh · August 29, 2026

Most marketplaces work the same way

Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist, Nextdoor — they're all built around the same basic idea: a seller posts a price, and a buyer either pays it or messages to haggle. That works fine, but it has two problems most people who've used them know well. First, the price is whatever the seller guessed, not what the market actually thinks it's worth. Second, the private-message haggling invites lowball offers and a lot of back-and-forth that goes nowhere.

Sell For Free runs real auctions

This is the biggest difference: Sell For Free lets a listing run as an actual ascending auction, where buyers bid against each other and the price finds its own level. None of the marketplaces above do this — they're fixed-price by design. If an item has real demand, an auction can get you more than you'd have guessed to ask for. Bidding happens in the open on the listing, so there's no haggling in private messages. If you'd rather skip the auction, Buy It Now works exactly like you'd expect from any other marketplace.

No listing fees, no cut of the sale

Posting a listing and placing a bid are free on every plan, and Sell For Free doesn't take a percentage when something sells. The Free plan covers up to 30 new listings a month; Member raises that to 300, and Pro to 3,000.

National reach

Listings are visible and searchable nationally, so an item with real demand isn't capped to whoever happens to live nearby.

The short version

  • Real bidding, not just a fixed price you have to guess at.
  • No haggling in DMs — bids happen in the open.
  • Buy It Now when you'd rather skip the auction entirely.
  • No listing fees or cut of the sale, on every plan.
  • National reach — not capped to your immediate area.
